Scams Awareness Week 24 – 28 August

Scams awareness week encourages Australians to recognise, avoid and report scams. This year’s theme, “No one’s just a number“, reminds us that every scam has a real human impact, affecting people’s finances, wellbeing and trust.

The good news is that a few simple steps can help protect you and your organisation.

  • Pause before acting on unexpected requests to transfer money, change banking details, or provide personal information.
  • Verify payment requests independently using trusted contact details or an official website, not the details provided in a message.
  • Apply a two-person verification process for payment changes and carefully check account details before approving transfers.
  • Watch for scam warning signs, including urgent demands, unusual email addresses, poor grammar, unexpected requests and pressure to act quickly.
  • Protect your accounts with strong, unique passwords and multi-factor authentication and never share passwords, PINs or security codes.
  • Report suspected scams immediately, change affected passwords, retain evidence, monitor accounts and contact the ADF if you are unsure about a request.

Who to contact?

  • The ADF: If the scam relates to your ADF account or a request involving the ADF, contact us straight away for assistance and verification.
  • Scamwatch: Report the scam and access current scam alerts and advice www.scamwatch.gov.au
  • National Anti-Scam Centre: Find information on emerging scams and scam prevention www.nasc.gov.au
  • ReportCyber: Report cybercrime, online fraud, phishing, and identity theft incidents www.cyber.gov.au/report-and-recover/report
  • State/Territory police
